Why won't my baby monitor connect to 5 GHz Wi-Fi?
Almost all Wi-Fi baby monitors use only 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. The 5 GHz band is faster but has shorter range and less wall penetration — neither property is ideal for a device that may sit in a room far from the router. If your router broadcasts a single combined SSID (e.g., "HomeNetwork" that blends both bands), your phone may see it as 5 GHz while the monitor expects 2.4 GHz. Separate your SSIDs into "HomeNetwork_2.4G" and "HomeNetwork_5G" and connect the monitor to the 2.4 GHz one.
Does a baby monitor need internet access to work?
It depends on the type. Wi-Fi video monitors that use cloud streaming (Nanit, Infant Optics DXR-10 Pro, Motorola) require active internet for remote viewing on your phone. However, viewing on the physical included parent unit (if included) usually works on the local network without internet. DECT (digital cordless phone protocol) and analogue RF monitors operate completely independently of Wi-Fi and internet. For internet outage resilience, DECT units offer the most reliability.
Will my baby monitor work if I have a VPN running on my router?
Possibly not. A VPN configured at the router level encrypts and reroutes all outbound traffic through the VPN server. Baby monitor apps that use cloud relay servers (Nanit, Motorola Connect) connect to specific IP ranges that the VPN may block or route incorrectly, causing connection failures or high latency. The fix is to add the baby monitor and its cloud domain to the VPN's split-tunnel exclusion list, or disable the VPN for the monitor's network segment.
How far from the router can a baby monitor reach?
Wi-Fi baby monitors typically achieve reliable connection within 30–50 ft (10–15 m) of the router in a typical home with walls. The 2.4 GHz band penetrates walls better than 5 GHz but is more susceptible to interference from microwaves and neighbouring networks. Placing the router centrally, using Wi-Fi 6 equipment with better signal management, or adding a mesh node near the nursery will all improve reliability. Some monitors (e.g., Owlet Dream Sock) use Bluetooth for the sensor component and only stream via Wi-Fi for video.
