What charging connectors do electric vehicles use?
In North America, the main standards are: J1772 (Level 1/2 AC charging, used by virtually all non-Tesla EVs), CCS1 / CCS2 (DC fast charging — CCS1 in NA, CCS2 in Europe), NACS (Tesla's connector, now adopted by Ford, GM, Rivian, and others), and CHAdeMO (Nissan Leaf, some older Japanese EVs). Most newer EVs ship with a J1772 adapter and increasingly support NACS. In Europe, Type 2 and CCS2 dominate.
Can I use a Level 2 home charger with any EV?
Most Level 2 chargers use a J1772 plug, which is compatible with virtually all non-Tesla EVs sold in North America. Tesla vehicles need a J1772 adapter (included at purchase). For NACS vehicles (newer Tesla, Ford, GM, etc.), check whether the charger has a NACS plug or whether an adapter is needed. The vehicle's onboard charger also determines maximum AC acceptance rate — a 7.2 kW car cannot charge faster than 7.2 kW even on a 19.2 kW EVSE.
What is the difference between CCS and CHAdeMO?
Both are DC fast charging protocols, but they use incompatible connectors and communication protocols. CCS (Combined Charging System) combines the AC J1772 pins with two additional DC pins and is the dominant standard in North America and Europe for new EVs. CHAdeMO is a Japanese standard used by Nissan Leaf and older Mitsubishi models. CHAdeMO stations are becoming rare in North America as automakers converge on CCS and NACS.
Can I use a Tesla Supercharger if I don't drive a Tesla?
In North America, Tesla's Supercharger network began opening to non-Tesla vehicles in 2023. Non-Tesla EVs with CCS1 ports need a NACS-to-CCS1 adapter (available from Tesla). Vehicles from brands that have adopted NACS natively (Ford, GM, Rivian) can use Superchargers directly. Check the Tesla app for station availability and current pricing for non-Tesla users.
