Can I use third-party or remanufactured ink cartridges?

Third-party and remanufactured cartridges typically fit and feed ink in most printers. The main risks are: HP and some Epson firmware updates that add chip verification rejecting non-OEM cartridges, ink formulations that may affect color accuracy or dry times, and inaccurate ink-level readings if the chip does not communicate fill levels correctly. Always verify whether your specific printer model blocks third-party cartridges before purchasing — some HP Instant Ink-enrolled printers enforce OEM-only policies through the subscription terms.

What is the difference between XL and standard cartridges?

XL (extra-large or high-yield) cartridges are the same physical size as standard cartridges but come pre-filled with more ink, printing significantly more pages. For example, the HP 962XL black prints approximately 2,000 pages versus 550 for the standard HP 962. The cost per page is lower with XL cartridges. Both standard and XL versions with the same model number are compatible with the same printer models — the XL suffix indicates fill level only.

Why does my printer report an incompatible cartridge when I install a genuine one?

This happens for three common reasons: the cartridge is made for a different regional market and has a different chip version, a firmware update has added DRM that rejects refilled cartridges even if the model number is genuine, or the cartridge chip has a poor electrical connection. For the last case, remove and reseat the cartridge, then clean the contacts on both the cartridge and the printer bay with a dry lint-free cloth and try again. If a confirmed-genuine cartridge still reports incompatible, the printer's carriage contacts may need professional cleaning.
